Best virtual server to use beneath an OpenVMS emulator?

I need to set up a demo system that can travel. I could use a bare metal solution, but I wanted to use this as a chance to get familiar with virtual servers on x86. What virtual server is best suited? |

As usual: it depends; do you need a full blown, multi-processor system, you’ll need at least one more core than you will run VMS on, plus the appropiate amount of memory. If you just want to demonstrate a basic system with somewhat limited abilities a dual core system with 4 MB could be sufficient. However, keep in mind that, AFAIK, every emulator will use the system ’s clock to run, so frequeny matters. Plus you will definitely require a main-power connection, since the processor will only run on full speed Emulator performance scales with the host speed, that’s true. But any decent emulator will run much faster than a physical VAX small enough to carry. At a VMS Bootcamp, I saw a portable VAX. It was a MicroVAX II built into a metal suitcase. Someone REALLY needed a portable VAX. Maybe one of those crazy Cold War devices… |

Are you asking about the emulator software, or the host’s system (such as VMware)? If you want to put that into a laptop, I’d go quad-core and as much memory as you can put in it. |
